Kirkintilloch Kelvin
Brass Ensemble

Formed in 1994, Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass is the result of many years of brass tuition in Kirkintilloch by a number of instructors, most notably Willie Tennant.

Following the successes of the senior outfit The Kirkintilloch Band, and the enthusiasm of many younger players, it was felt the formation of a second competing band in Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass would give an outlet for the other musical talents within the area.

KKB competed in the 4th section at the Scottish Championships for the first time in 1995, conducted by Charles Keenan. The year 2000 saw KKB take 2nd place in the 3rd section at the Scottish Championships; following this, on October 20 in London’s Royal Albert Hall, Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass, under the baton of Raymond Tennant, became 3rd section champions of Great Britain.

Currently KKB is a championship section band, having been Scottish first section champions in 2009 and 2011 as well as 1st section band of the year in 2009. The band has also proudly represented Scotland at lower section finals on six occasions.

Our new musical director is Lewis Bettles, who joined us in June 2022. 

Lewis was raised in Yorkshire, where he enjoyed a busy childhood learning to play the trombone, euphonium, percussion and piano. By the age of 13, Lewis was performing as a soloist and member with championship section bands such Stannington Brass Band and Stocksbridge Band, as well as being a member of the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band.

After moving to Scotland to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2014, he has since enjoyed a rewarding career performing, conducting and teaching in Scotland. Lewis works regularly as a freelance musician with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and more. 

He has also had the opportunity to travel the world as a musician, with performances in Germany, Denmark, France, Spain, Malta and Japan. Alongside his work as a performer, Lewis also enjoys conducting Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass and Irvine and Dreghorn Brass Band, as well as teaching the future generations of brass musicians.


The team playing on 5th November will be about half of the band and will include
